Described as “one of the most smoothly executed controlled demolition operations” in Dundee to date, two of the city’s redundant multi-storey blocks were dramatically reduced to rubble on Sunday 14th May, 2000.
The 15-storey Harefield and Kilspindie Courts in Foggyley Gardens, Lochee, which contained a total of 168 flats, were demolished by 30kg of explosives in each block, set off by 800 detonators strategically located on four floors of each building.
The series of controlled explosions levelled both structures within five seconds of detonation. The operation run according to plan with no reported injuries or damage to adjacent properties, the nearest of which was about 50 yards away. Two hundred neighbouring households were evacuated as a safety precaution. As well as the evacuation of these properties, a series of road closures were put in place around the zone.
A joint operation put into place by ourselves, Tayside Police and Dundee City Council ensured the public’s safety. The demolition was part of a widespread transformation of the city’s housing stock which involves getting rid of properties which are proving difficult to let. |
