Work Begins at Glasgow's Red Road Flats
The Red Road Flats dominate the Glasgow skyline but not for much longer. Safedem has won the first phase of the demolition works to bring down what was once one of the tallest steel frame buildings in Europe. The Red Road flats are iconic for a number of reasons. The multi-storey buildings comprise of between 28-32 floors, are of steel frame construction and have an extremely high level of asbestos containing materials both internally and externally. The Red Road buildings were the largest in Europe at the time of construction in the early 1960's, and remained the largest only until fairly recently. The huge asbestos removal programme will start in March 2009 and is expected to take around nine months to complete. The Health and Safety Executive are already working together with Safedem on this huge project. Following the asbestos removal and strip out works, Safedem's Structural and Explosives Engineers will examine the exposed steel frame construction to confirm the method of demolition. |
